In this episode we will dive into getting out newly purchased controller calibrated and ultimately setup on an FPV simulator where we can practice flying. ETHiX is my brand and we are aiming to refine and simplify this amazing hobby. Got my QX7…got Velocidrone…Working on getting stick time. Looking forward to the rest of the series, and following one step at a time.

Stone-cold, geezer, mechanical idiot, noob here.

Awesome men, great guide! I already was practicing lift off for a few months on a daily base. Always thought to buy a FPV controller for pinching. The xbox controller feels like i miss some accuracy. Can you do a guide about FPV goggles? Also do you recommend a tiny copter and practice in real life. You are absolutely right. Then Goggles and hook them up to simulator if possible that helped me also. The Acrobee was not only fun but very good for learning. It took a while to get the tools and components to build my first quad.

Then of course I crashed it …but I knew how to fix it …. At this time I now can fly full acro and not break anything on my mm quad. Lot of good information out there. So you can do it if you keep at it. Thanks again for the inspiration. Is this not possible with FRSky transmitters or am I missing something obvious? Anyone know why my quad heads straight for the sky when the simulator starts up?

What did i miss? Can anyone help? Thanks again for doing these! I really like this approach. Do you have an alternate recommendation for a whoop to try out after we graduate from the sim? This video makes all the difference. No matter where you are in your FPV journey the universal thing that will make you better is practice. It's a no brainer that there is positive relationship between stick time and ability wherever you fall on the spectrum.

Drone Simulators can help you speed things up a bit, gain confidence and test various maneuvers. Thinking logically lets be generous and say that a standard quad flight lasts for three minutes if my quads get 2 minutes I'm happy!

If I play on the sim for an hour that is the equivalent of flying 30 lipos, that is about two of my weekly flying sessions for me in only one hour. Even if you say that an hour in the sim half as effective as real practice then an extra hour a week would make a huge difference to your ability as a pilot.

This is why I suggest everybody should practice on a sim as often as possible. Using low settings some sims can run on basic machines with dedicated graphics cards and even some modern ones with integrated systems. Some sims let you try them out before you buy to see if they are suitable however most sims list minimum specs that you should always follow.

An underpowered machine will result in a low frame rate which will make flying far more difficult and frustrating. No sim really uses cutting edge graphics but for the best experience you should look for a PC with a Nvidia GTX or better. Different quad sims have different graphics requirements so pick one to suit your needs.

Personally I use a Macbook Air for my sims. It will run the best sims on the lowest settings smooth enough but I would recommend something with a little more graphical power. The best controller for any drone sim is going to be a real transmitter. You can use a generic gaming controller however the precision it gives you is severely limited and you will find things much harder. The other issue is that gaming controllers tend to have centering sticks.

Lunchtime Velocidrone using Mr Steele's setting.

For flying a drone we really want no spring on the throttle. Could you imagine driving a car with the throttle sprung in the middle? The problem is that most people don't have a transmitter to begin with but do have a computer and want to give it a try.Menu FliteTest Forums.

Dec 28, In a nut shell I have always stayed away from SIMs because I never felt that they really had much benefit to me personally.

The main use I saw for simulators was for teaching beginners the basics of RC flight and FPV quadcopter stick movements, as far as a skill building pro level pilot tool for ultimate ball rippage. My Favorite at the moment is Velocidrone. There are two reasons you would run a simulator in my eyes.

A beginner learning the basics of FPV stick control and or an intermediate pilot just looking for more stick time when it's cold or dark. You are a moderate to advanced pilot that wants to try new tricks or maneuvers.

With those two reasons stated we can delve into the principle that make FPV or any real world simulation so helpful. In our case we want to push our skills.

What I discovered is that building the quad is only the first step; there's quite a bit of configuration that needs to be done before it's flyable.

As far as I can tell, there's not yet a single source for build info, but if you know of a source for complete build instructions that cover quad, FC, transmitter, receiver, VTX configuration, heasdet, battery maintenance, etc.

Steele's video does have some good tips, but it assumes you've built and flown a quad or other RC aircraft before. I've tried to capture most of the up-front costs associated with building this quad as a complete beginner who has no local resources. I'm not going to lie and say this page has everything you need to get flying, but it will give you a good idea of how much you'll be spending on parts and ancilliary gear. You'll need to supply tools lke soldering iron, heat gun, glue gun, wire cutters, pliers, heat shrink, solder, desoldering braid, etc.

If you are practicing in Velocidrone, you'll want to configure idle up before trying to fly this quad; I had a few terrifying moments before I understood what was wrong. Aside from that, the muscle memory from the simulator really did translate!

I've never seen a misc list that long! Agreed there's no one-stop shopping for info in this hobby. I feel like you've done a nice job documenting your start. The build looks great, man. Have fun with it! Joshua Bardwell has some super in depth stuff.

RotorRiot has some more surface level how to videos for tgose who dont care to know all the things u can do to configure your quad.

I got a lot of my info from JB and the rest. There just doesn't seem to be a single place to get all of the info you need in order to build a "Mr. Steele Alien" as a complete newb. As this is a popular and dare-I-say iconic build, I was surprised, that's all. Clearly Steele has spent a lot of time thinking about beginners and I hope this might be part of the "cool new things" the Ethix team are working on.

It's too late for me, but it would have been nice to have a "From Zero to Power Loop! You didn't see the 8 weeks of crashing in the simulator. It helps to have settings for the simulator that match the quad I built.

I still suck, though.

For now It gave us a p video feed with latency on-par with the status quo, analog video. Traditionally we've used analog video systems for low-latency video, but the video quality is far from ideal. It's a trade-off we've been willing to accept for the control.

Now we've got the best of both worlds and what.

While they lacked further upgrades like an updated DVR and power button they were still a market success. With the announcement of the Orqa FPV.

One the community finally had a potential HDO killer on the horizon. With only weeks before the release of the Orqa FPV.Doug from our Multicopter Group was frustrated by his slow progress of FPV learningand asked how he could improve his flying. The outpouring support and suggestions from our group members were simply amazing and encouraging.

Make sure to check out our tutorial on how to fly FPV. I am thinking of putting the goggles aside and just going with a screen. I also need to find a really good spot. I always seem to have space restrictions… So you guys think switching to, or at least trying a monitor to learn is not going to help that much?

I know this feelings — but usually this is a result of the wrong goggles. Get a decent FPV Goggles helps a lot! Honestly I find myself being distracted with a screen and end up looking at the quad instead of the screen. Bad news if your LOS skills lack. Keep at it with the LOS though, never know when it could save you from a crash, lose video and then. I flew with a screen for months with no problems. It took a while to get used to FPV even with a screen.

Just suck it up and stick with it. Lots of great suggestions there! Thanks Guys! Doug give it some time, get a boat load of props lower your rates and just do gentle manoeuvres. The two things to concentrate on are altitude and turns.

I thought I was a foot off the ground, but was really like 20 feet! What camera lens are you using? I find a 2. Laggy and too wide screen. Really hard to tell distances. Just some comments, always go forward and if you want to look around just make a smooth small circle with yaw.

Start with stabilized mode and use Goggles to able to focus on the screen only. Goto a big flat place and put something at middle that you can turn around. Learn the turn manoeuvres like using yaw and roll and throttle at the same time, to avoid drifting.
